If The Customer Is Always Right, How do you Handle Custom Forms?
I have been selling online for almost 10 years now and I have always offered international shipping. Without international buyers, my sales would be a lot less. Most of the time, these transactions are completed with no problems but one thing I run into from time to time is requests for false customs form information. Every international package I mail needs to have a customs form. My policy is that I do not lie on custom forms EVER. But when doing business there is the saying that "Your customer is always right" so how do you handle this? I find this particular situation to be tricky because I do not want to loose future sales but I will not do anything to jeopardize myself. These are some things that I do. It may not make the customer happy but I am firm with these rules. *If someone asks me to lie about the value of the item. - I tell them that false information on a customs form is illegal and that I am running a business. I let them know that the value will be declared. *If someone asks me to mark the item as a gift. - I let them know that I will not be doing that. I tell them that I mail hundreds of custom packages a year and the post office keeps the slips. I will not write false info on a customs form. *If they ask me to mark the value as $0 so they do not have to pay customs fees. - I tell them no. I will not lie on a customs form because it is illegal. I let them know that part of shopping internationally is a customs fee and they need to take that into consideration before bidding. |
