Horror Movie review: Hatchet
OH! I love Netflix! In my mailbox arrived a gem of a movie called Hatchet. It was in limited theater release and a friend of mine HIGHLY recommended it but by the time I could find a baby sitter for a night out, it was out of theaters. So a few months later, it's in my mailbox. I have to admit, I did not get to watch it right away, busy week. But last night my boyfriend and I put on our pajamas, grabbed a bottle of Jose Cuervo Gold Tequilla, a mini cake, two forks and a box of kleenex (I am recovering from a cold) and popped in Hatchet. We were hooked within the first 5 minutes. Campy yet not so over the top that I had to hit fast forward. We laughed yet the blood and gore looked good and not super cheeseball. Then there came the Marilyn Manson music, Mardi gras, boobs and beer. New Orleans! Personally, I love New orleans (I even ran to the other room to grab an old photo album to show my boyfriend when the movie talked about St. Louis Cemetery #1) so right away I felt a connection. Haunted ghost tour- I would have gone one one too but $40 bucks a person seemed steep :) hahaha. Anyways, cut to the gore. HOLY MOLY! I laughed, squirmed, grimaced and laughed some more. Again, it was over the top gore and blood and all that but it was great! I LOVED how each person died differently. and I loved how the story of the killer was so incredibly simple. Just right to the point with no hidden twists. Deformed kid, died, fire, dad, come back, kill. VERY easy set-up for a part 2. and 3. and one day, maybe even an 18! The end was good too- I won't spoil it but it was not what I expected which was great. All in all, I am not sure the average Joe would be into this movie but if you loved movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 or Basketcase 2 and 3 you will totally dig this flick! BONUS: this movie is packed full of horror movie icons! Kane Hodder, Robert Englund, and Tony Todd.
