Flat Rate Priority Mail Shipping

I have been selling online for almost 9 years now. I started selling on Ebay to earn money while I was in college. It was a good way to get money for extra expenses. I soon learned that I could do it full time and as I got older, I realized that it is the perfect job for me to have! I am an artist and a stay at home mommy and I look for the easiest and most cost effective way to ship my packages.

There are different shipping options available. Lets go with USPS for this guide. The rates increased earlier this year making things a bit complicated. Now they are scheuled to go up again. There are size restrictions on everything. International shipping changed also. Surface mail was stopped. With the new rates and the cost of gas, I find that flat rate shipping is the most cost effective shipping method for me and my customers.

The envelope or box is FREE. i can order supplies online at www.usps.com and have them delivered to my house in about a week. The FREE box or envelope saves anywhere from $1 to $3 on average. If i were to ship the same item first class, I would have to provide the packaging supplies and the cost of the envelope, tape, and padding ads up!

Lets say a priority mail flat rate envelope costs $4.60 to ship online (with free delivery confirmation). I charge a total of $5.50 for shipping and handling within the US. This covers tape, trip to post office, padding, etc. The package will arrive in a few days. Your item arrives fast.

Same package going to the same place but shipped first class may cost less to mail but the cost of materials bumps the price up to equal if not MORE than the priority mail flat rate price. say $3 to ship, plus $1.50 for envelope, plus tape, gas, padding, etc. and it takes LONGER to arrive. how does the buyer benefit?

People ask me if I can ship cheaper all the time and I say yes. I can. But if you need something faster and you want to save more than a few cents, just go with priority.

First class and parcel post do have benefits. Parcel Post is great for shipping large items- the price difference between priority and parcel post is now HUGE when mailing packages over a certain size.

USPS offers both flat rate boxes (available in 2 sizes) and envelopes. You can get free supplies online or you can pick up small numbers of supplies at your local post office. You can also print postage online- the benefit to that is FREE or discounted delivery confirmation :)
