Don't Forget About those With Cancer
Cancer Sucks. I lost someone very dear to me last year and not a day goes by that she is not in my thoughts. When she was diagnosed, she had to have treatment. This meant notifying her employer, colleagues, friends and family. Some people treated her as if she was already dead when she told them. They began treating her differently. This made her feel more depressed about her illness. One thing that people did was forget. They stopped calling, writing, visiting. If she ran into them at the grocery store or doctors office they always made excuses and promised to keep in touch but they never did. Some would call but just talk about themselves. What she needed was a friend. Sure, she had me and her son but she needed friends. Someone to confide in and once she was diagnosed, people disappeared from her life. I think they were all cowards in a way. The reason they stopped talking to her was because they were scared of death and their own selfish feelings. Had they just called her once a week or dropped by to have lunch, she would have been in much better spirits. Please, if you know anyone who is sick (Beyond cancer, any illness) please pick up the phone, get in your car or pick up a pen and pay some attention to them. Make them feel a little less alone. Offer to make them some food (ask what they can eat before hand), give them a manicure, drive them to the store, walk them around the neighborhood, anything! You will make a difference. Just because someone gets sick, it does not mean they do not exist. |
