Donate or Toss?

I always get angry when someone tells me they cleaned out their garage and threw away so much stuff. What did you toss? Most of the time, I am unhappy with what I hear.

It really does not take *that* much work to keep things out of a landfill. Here are some suggestions for anyone who plans to just throw away old stuff.

heck, you will save yourself money. Do you know how much a dumpster costs? Why rent one when someone will take the stuff for FREE?

*Your curb. your curb is a very valuable tool. All you need is your unwanted item, tape, marker, and a piece of paper. Make a sign that says FREE. Tape it to the ugly dresser you got from a yard sale in 1983. Yes, its broken, who cares. Just because the damaged drawer bugs you does not mean someone craftier won't come along and fix it up. Don't want that old dryer? Curb it (tape up the lid so no kids can climb in). Don't want that old couch? curb it. Old lamp? curb it. Place it out on trash night and chances are, it will be gone by morning. In my family, we always play a little game of "How long will it sit on the curb?" if you want to go the extra mile, place and ad on craigslist. I t will be GONE in no time.

*Scrap Metal . This goes like hotcakes in Los Angeles. It does not matter WHAT kind of scrap metal it is- Your old bike with flat tires, bed frame, shower door, metal fence. Simply place an ad on Craigslist stating "FREE SCRAP METAL" and tell them the location of the pile. We would give our address and say it was in the driveway or whatever and in a few hours, every inch if it was gone. They recycle it for money, I dont have to rent a dumpster!

*Clothes. yeah, just because you hung onto your clothes from 1981 and decided they are finally ugly enough to leave your closet does NOT mean that someone won't want them. Every one has different tastes and these should go to a thrift store. Don't toss them. Some charities will drive a ginat truck to your house for free and haul away whatever you don't want. That is EASY. Just dial a couple numbers and give your address over the phone.

*Toys. Just because junior is done with his toys does not mean some other kid can't use them. Toys cost a lot of money and lets face it, kids interest change quickly. Donate them. Some parents cannot afford toys from retail stores so they rely on secondhand shops. The kids don't care if Barbie is missing a shoe! Don't toss her :) Again, some thrift store will drive to your house.

*Old Towels. Make a call to your local animal shelter. Some need old towels for the dogs and cats. If you are out running errands one day, it takes little effort to drop a bag of old towels off at the counter in the shelter. While you are there, donate Fluffies old collar and Spots old leash. the animals can use them.
